Why Tap Water Isn’t Always Safe – What’s Really in Your Water?

Jun 10,2025 | RASLOK

Most people assume tap water is safe because it's treated by PUB (Singapore’s National Water Agency). While water from PUB's water plants meets strict safety and quality standards, it can still be affected by contaminants as it travels through pipes to your home. These contaminants may impact both health and taste. Common issues include:

  • Chlorine and Chloramine – Added during treatment to disinfect water, but can cause taste and odor issues.

  • Heavy Metals – Lead, mercury, and arsenic may leach from old or corroded household plumbing.

  • Microorganisms – Bacteria, viruses, and parasites that may survive inadequate maintenance of household water systems.

  • Sediments and Rust – Often found in areas with aging infrastructure or internal pipe corrosion.

  • Pesticides and Industrial Chemicals – In rare cases, trace amounts may enter the water supply through groundwater contamination.

Even if the water leaving PUB's plants is safe, prolonged exposure to trace elements or secondary contamination through pipes and storage tanks can pose risks—especially for young children, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems.

Installing a water purifier at the point of use provides an added layer of protection. A multi-stage filtration system improves taste, removes residual contaminants, and offers peace of mind that your family is drinking clean and safe water every day.
